Winter Skaters,
I get to lead next Sunday. It would be nice if we could move it to Saturday, when the temperature is supposed to get up to 65 degrees. Sunday is supposed to have a high of 51 and a chance of rain.
I will check for updated forecasts and for comments from any skaters who have ideas about participating.
The route I am thinking about is very long (perhaps four hours), but passes by several Metro Train stations so people will not have to skate the whole thing. I want to go northeast on New York Avenue and Michigan Avenue to the Northwest Branch/Sligo trail network. Then we would follow the bike trail to Silver Spring, MD where we will have the opportunity to join the polar bear club by taking a January dip in an outdoor pool (It is well heated; I swam in it this morning).
The return trip could use the available bits of the partially completed new Metropolitan Branch trail if I can figure out how to connect that together. I was also thinking of using Beach Drive through Rock Creek Park but it is not very easy to climb back out of the park after getting to DC. I will get my maps and work some more on that part of the route.
I have led three skates to Silver Spring in past years and this proposed route is largely similar (so I won't get lost while leading this time).
Please reply if you have comments, questions, or protests.
Bill
